One main difference between the roles of academics and writers is the amount of emphasis on reading that each one has. Academics tend to focus a lot on reading "strong important published texts" while writers tend to focus mostly on writing and then reading other writers' work. This creates a problem for Elbow because he wants his students to be both academics and writers, but in order to achieve this he has to find a fine balance between reading and writing.
